We install and service LG, mitsubishi ductless systems. These provide heating capability down to -15 degree's outside temperature, cooling also. For computer rooms more specialized units can provide cooling down to 5 degrees. These units operate on electricity alone, no gas and have been in operation in europe and asia for over 40 years. This is not new technology, just not as commonly used as conventional air conditioning. They are highly efficient, no ductwork required, or gas lines. For the heating side, these are what is called "heat pumps" basically air conditioning working in reverse. It pulls latent heat from outside air(it is always there) and puts it in the home.
Summer time it will do the opposite and pull heat out of home for cooling purposes. Typical life is 20 years for these units. Conventional furnace and a/c units 15-20 years also. Here are a few new installations down below. The lineset which is the refrigeration piping can be covered with a material called line hide looks similar to oversized getter/downspout lengths.
